Review: Shiseido SPF 50 for Face and Body

It's summer break and I'm not taking any summer classes. Yay. Well, not really yay because I wanted to get that damn class over with. Unfortunately they're not offering that class during this summer. So I'm just bummin around...

Anyway, I used the Shiseido SPF 50 for Face and Body for about 3 months (that's how long the 100mL bottle lasted for me). I bought it on sale and saw that it would expire 3 months after I purchased it so I used it as much and as fast as I could. Normally, I would've just used this for my face because it is pricey (broke college student status), but I wanted to use this up before it expired (skin care items expire 2 years after the manufacturing date, right? unless theyre fresh, organic or whatever they expire earlier). So yeah, used this on my face and arms.
This product overall was okay. I wouldn't buy it at normal price (just because at normal price it would be about 10++USD more expensive than the sephora price--everything here is overpriced T.T I'll wait and buy more when I get back to the States or when it goes back on sale here.. haha).

Pros:
  • Very lightweight--doesn't feel heavy nor greasy.
  • Works well in humid weather.
  • Decent value for 100 mL -- as long as it's on sale in my country.
  • Great for oily/combination skin type--helps keep face matte. (not dry, just oiliness is somewhat controlled).
  • Good sun protection factor. The bottle doesn't indicate what percentage of zinc oxide it has which sucks. I think the SPF 55 one has around 13%? Anyway, I felt protected lol.
  • Doesn't streak or give white patches like some sunblocks I've used.
Cons:
  • Would not recommend this for dry skin. My face is combination-acneprone-somewhat sensitive. I put this on my face and it was fine, but when I put this on my neck, it dried the hell out of it. It was really freaking weird. I never experienced anything like that before. EW. That word sums up the skin condition of my neck after using it for a week or so. Anyway, I had to INTENSIVELY moisturize my neck after the damage this sunblock did to it. I stopped using this sunblock on my neck as soon as I saw the damage and slathered on clinque's moisture surge and that helped a lot but then wasn't enough, so after a layer of that I slathered on some organic moisturizer. Twice daily for about 2-3 weeks brought my skin back to normal. Never again. Worked well for my arms though, I had been using the Hawaiian Tropic sunblock on my arms but it felt so sticky and nasty, the Shiseido felt like nothing. It's great--just not on the neck.
  • It's just that--A SUNBLOCK--nothing more. & it doesn't claim to be anything more than that, however, with all the products today that multi-task, I'm looking for something that does more (more more more more...lol *sigh* asking for too much lol hahaha).
All in all, I would repurchase this if it was on sale. I've tried a good number of sunblocks and this one works the best in this humidass country.

Price: roughly 39USD on sale! -- normal price here is roughly 52USD. INSANE, huh? it's listed at sephora for 38usd. Anyway, if you're lucky enough to get it at the normal 38 usd price (w/c i just remembered, wasn't this 36usd before?) it's not a bad deal. As 100mL will last you a good amount of time. Although, never skimp on sunblock.

Product as a sunblock: 4/5 (minus 1 for that nasty dryness it caused my neck) but for face and arms, great.

Overall: Satisfied.

Uh

lol that's what I got when I googled "shitty boyfriend" credits to this site for the image.
I actually have several birds as pets. My dad LOVES animals. When I was in elementary i had a cockatoo. Beautiful bird, big-was bigger than my head. My dad used to put it on my shoulder and I'd walk around with it there. And yes it did shit on me. several times. =P

Battle with Acne continues

ARGH.. I hate acne T.T
...well who likes acne? lol but damn, I thought I was finally reaching a stage/age (20s) where acne wasn't a problem anymore. This past year, I was relatively acne-free. Until I got bombarded with exams, projects, etc. T.T

It got really bad about a month ago.

Brief history: I had problems with acne since I was a teenager (ha ha damn turning 20 was painful lol), from visiting dermatologists (using topical ointments such as differin and retin-a and oral meds) to using the clinique 3 step system to the clinique anti-blemish system then to proactiv. The dermatologists helped, if I actually stayed on the routine more than 3 months, I would've probably had good skin (my acne was never that severe though but still made me feel very self-conscious) However, at 13+ years old, I wasn't very diligent lol. I don't really remember how the clinique worked, but I stuck with the proactiv for awhile. I know it didn't work for a lot of people, some it even worsened their skin condition. In high school, it was a sort of didn't work for asian skin but worked for other skin types. My asian friends who tried it said it didn't work for them, but for my cuban/caucasian friends it worked great. I don't know really,lol I still wanted to give it a shot. And it worked--pretty much. I still got the occasional blemish during that time of the month, but otherwise it was controlled.

~picture from proactiv.com

--I give proactiv 5/5 for price (as one set does last a couple of months, 59.95USD you get the Renewing
cleanser, Revitalizing toner, Repairing lotion, Daily oil control, and the Refining mask.) ---->If you're on a budget, I suggest buying a gentle facial wash like cetaphil or one from neutrogena, along with a toner that has some sort of active ingredient, and just buying the Repairing lotion from Proactiv. It's nice to use a complete set, but I don't believe it's entirely necessary. I know I don't think I ever used the daily oil control in that set lol and I think I've gone through at least 4-5 sets?
EDIT---->OH, i think the prices have gone down since I last bought this? There's the 3 basic set(click) with the mask for 39.95? Pretty good.

--4/5 for efficacy, it does work, but not on all skin types and it takes diligence. They have a trial set which goes for 19.99USD. If you're hesitant, but want to try it, I suggest getting that. It will last around a month or so. This is a benzoyl peroxide(click) based line.

EDIT=> For alternatives with the same active ingredients, click here.

---Of course, visiting a dermatologist is best.

Then I moved to another country, wasn't as dilligent in using it as it was inconvenient to get, moved on to other skin care lines like those from The Face Shop and continued being relatively blemish free. However, I think it's also got a lot to do with being relatively stress-free.

Anyway...back to present. Terrible CYSTIC acne. Never have gotten such cystic acne before T.T
Went back to using Proactiv--well the lotion step, along with the Garnier Pure exfoliating wash and the Garnier astringent from the same line. This along with Christmas break/rest=<3. size="5">
SOME ON THE SPOT TREATMENTS I'VE USED/USING:
Jason 100% Pure Tea Tree Oil
on the back "helps promote healthier skin. Known for it's medicinal properties, Tea Tree Oil has been used for years as a natural bacteria fighting topical oil."
"To use: Dab on skin. Dilute with Witch Hazel or Vegetable oil for use on sensitive skin."
www.
jason-natural.com

Ok, first things first is the stench. OMG it stinks soooooo bad lol. The odor made me and my boyfriend pretty nautious. It is really strong. However, it does reduce the size of the blemish. I use it pure (without diluting it) with a cotton applicator. It's a clear oil. I like the top part where it has that hole/nozzle thing? lol So i can get just the right amount of product. I bought this for around 14USD for 30mL (including tax according to current exchange rates). On their website it's 10.06 USD
--price is relative, really depends on the person how they perceive the cost. For an on the spot treatment, 30 mL will probably last me a couple of months. I give it a 4/5.
--3/5 for efficacy, it's definitely not a miracle treatment. The zit isn't anywhere near flat the next day nor does it minimize the redness, however, it does
decrease the size. I like that it's pure & organic and a natural bacteria fighter-but the stench is truly funkyashell.

Garnier Pure SOS Anti-Blemish Spot Pen
According to this website(click)
"
contains zinc for its controlling properties, an anti-bacterial agent for its cleansing power, and 100% natural cucumber extract for its energizing and skin-hydrating qualities. This combination of natural active ingredients replies completely and efficiently to all problems associated with oily skin."

My first impression was that it's really.. "gu-ey" lol like sticky. It's a thick gel. Definitely not something you can wear makeup over. When it's dry, you can kind of peel it off. It feels somewhat tingly when on the spot. Feels like it's working. However, same as the last. Zit is not flat the next day, nor does it reduce redness. It does minimize inflammation after continual use.
--4/5 for price, I bought it for around 7USD for 10mL. The website where I got the quoted info has it for 6.65USD. I got that info from the website because I don't have the box anymore. I used this alongside the entire Garnier Pure line--was the most convenient to purchase at the time as it is easily available in my area. I like the exfoliating wash and the toner from this system. It's a salicylic acid and zinc based line.
--3/5 for efficacy

Top-Gel Extra Pearl Cream
Okay, now the ingredients on this aren't
exactly ideal: White Petrolatum, Light Mineral Oil, Anhydrous Lanolin, Purified Ozokerite, Isoprophyl Myristate, Titanium Dioxide, Talc, Collagen, Vit. E, Wilde Chamomile, Butylated Hydroxytoluene, Glyceryl Monotearate, Wheat Germ Oil, Silicon, Perfume.

Yeah, even just looking at the first two ingredients, one would be immediately turned off. However, I read so many rave reviews about this I had to try it.
--5/5 for price, I bought this for about 1.50USD you can't beat that--although yes some of the ingredients leave a lot to be desired. I can't find how much this contains lol but one tube if used on the entire face, can last about 2 months for me? I only use this at night though because it is pretty thick in consistency. Not ideal for use under makeup.
Ok--This isn't n
ecessarily a spot treatment, however, recently I have been using it as such. & it does work. It reduces the redness and minimizes the zit. Also with continuous & I mean continuous use, it helps the scars fade just a tiny tiny bit faster lol.
--4/5 for efficacy as it takes time and as with the next product, the zit size isn't like diminished diminished, it's just a wee bit smalller.

~picture from www.mariobadescu.com

Mario Badescu Drying Cream
According to their website(click)
"is an effective treatment to dry up small under the surface bumps and pimples. Just a few dabs smoothed on the erupted areas prevent pimples from getting larger and spreading out of control. Aloe rich cream conceals and heals erupted pimples.Ingredients: Deionized Water, Zinc Oxide, Aloe, Beeswax, Cetyl Alcohol, Lemon Extract, Colloidal Sulfur, Ervol, Octyl Palmitate, Ichthammol, Polysorbate 80, Titanium Dioxide, Polyglycerylmethacrylate (and) Propylene Glycol"

Ok, what I love about Mario Badescu is that they will mail you samples for your skin type at no charge. Visit their website and answer their questionaire(click) and they will mail you the samples within days--what great service! No loss there, just a bit of your time.
Anyway, I like this. It does what it says--> it minimized the size of the breakout and prevented it from spreading. It is a bit thick in consitency and has a slight odor to it, but nothing even close to the nauseating scent of the tea tree oil.
--4/5 for price as it is 12USD for 0.5oz. Not bad as you only need a tiny bit. This will last for awhile. The sample alone lasted me 3+ months. Full size? I dont know, maybe until it expires? lol
--4/5 for efficacy. It does what it claims, but the shrink in size is not like "Oh WOW!!" it's more like.. "oh, yay" lol do you get what I mean?

Hmm, as far as I can tell it seems like benzoyl peroxide seems to work the best for my acne. Always check the active ingredients in your acne fighting system. Some people may be allergic to salicylic acid or tea tree oil, zinc oxide or yes, benzoyl peroxide. Some may be more receptive to one active ingredient than the others. Well, hope this helps someone out there. lol

~~~currently i'm mixing up proactiv, clinique, and dior. will update! =]
Yay, I can blog again.
Wow, been busy/lazy. More the latter than the former. Hah. hahaha
Anyway, now that it's Christmas break, I'm going to try posting more. I need to lose weight and eat healthy. I've been getting into soy products lately like soy milk and tofu and whatnot, but I've been reading some negative stuff about soy. Hmm... wonder if it really is bad for you?... and what is too much?..
Etude House Magic BB Cream SPF 30 PA++ Review
My favorite BB Cream thus far. *Disclaimer: The following are solely based upon my experience with this BB Cream. I'm not promoting it, nor am I promoting that Globe1 phone card lol. It was the closest thing lying around.
Here's to give you an idea of the actual size. 1st is next to an average phone card. 2nd in the palm of my hand. At first I just did the hand one, but then I thought maybe they'll think my hand is huge lol so I grabbed something closest to me.
Active Ingredients according to the box.
It claims "BB Magic Cream offers natural looking coverage that nourishes, corrects skin complexion and protects against sun damage." It's 35ml with a sanitary pump. 1 full pump is sufficient for a layer over my entire face. Used everyday, this would probably last me around 2-3 months?
Why I like this:
  • It feels very light.
  • Not greasy.
  • Spreads easy.
  • Doesn't make your face look white-even with flash.
  • It has a yellow undertone-works well for someone using Medium Beige in Bare Escentuals.**
  • Gives a dewy *not oily* look. Looks natural, but better ;)
  • Claims to protect against UVA-UVB damage-if I plan on staying out in the sun, I'd still use another product with SPF.
  • Decently controls oil-Maybe use one blotting sheet the whole day. For reference I have somewhat oily acne-prone skin.
  • Doesn't melt. Works great in hot, humid weather-which is everyday here.
  • Didn't break me out, actually "calmed" my skin after a mishap with Ly-na pearl cream =(.
  • Pretty affordable at less than 20USD.
Why I'm still open to finding something else.
  • The coverage is pretty sheer-would not recommend this for someone looking for medium- heavy coverage.
  • I don't find the coverage to be all that "buildable".
  • It's not readily found in my area. I had to CP this from Korea.
  • If I use one layer of this plus a layer of mineral foundation for that extra coverage=really cakey.
Even though this product definitely offers "natural looking coverage" and calmed my skin, it's somewhat difficult to get it shipped here. If this was readily available then Yes, I would definitely repurchase. However, it's not. So I will continue my hunt.
**Even though BB Creams claim to be able to match any skin tone, after trying a couple of different brands I don't find this to be true at all. Some either really don't match or it takes hours to finally "blend" into my skin--or maybe it just got wiped off? lol.
Hello Blogspot.
After browsing through countless beauty blogs, I decided to try it out. lol God knows I've bought a lot of makeup junk recently. I would like to use this blog to catalog what I've tried & give some "reviews" based on my experience with the product... perhaps save someone a buck or two =P
Anyway, here's a somewhat recent haul-CP from S. Korea.
Excuse the ghetto messy photo haha. I'm not sure if that was everything, but I know I didn't include the books and parasols I ordered. Who wants to see that?
Pictured above are BB Creams (Kimoko is a very good enabler lol her reviews inspired me to order like.. 10 bbcreams.. hahaha), a bunch of Skinfood stuff, cleansers, wash-off masks, foundations, liquid highlighters, fake eyelashes, and some samples. Background to haul: A couple months back, I was told that SkinFood was one of the better Korean cosmetics company. Did some online research, saw the trend on BB Creams=haul.
BB Creams include:
  • Skinfood Aloe Sun BB Cream SPF 20 PA+
  • Skinfood Mushroom Multi Care BB Cream SPF 20 PA+
  • Liole Beyond the Solution BB Cream
  • Missha Watery BB Cream Spf 27 (i think)
  • Etude House Magic BB Cream
  • Etude House Magic BB Powder
  • Coogi Flowertox BB Cream
  • BRTC Perfect Recover BB Cream
I know there are various reviews already available online, but if anyone has any questions on the above mentioned products, just hit me up.
